His obituary referred to him as Wisconsin's pioneer boatman. He ran the ferry crossing for the Fox river before bridges were built. He began his boating career when he was 15 and received his boatman's license at the age of 21. His boat was called the John Denessen, after his father. He retired in 1919 after receiving a knee injury.
