Don DeMent, 96, of Mt. Vernon, died 7:15 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Sunday, July 14, 1918, in Jefferson County, the son of Kelly and Lettie (Henry) DeMent. He married Dorothy I. Price on Oct. 22, 1939, in Mt. Vernon; she preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2012.

He is survived by his daughters, Janice Dusharme and husband Jim of Woodlawn and Sue Marlow and husband Mike of Huffman, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Kathy DeMent of Barrington; grandchildren, Michelle DeBiase and husband Brian of Aurora, Angie Colebar and husband Wes of Kirkwood, Mo., Stacy (Marlow) Colpitts and husband Justin of Spring, Texas and Courtney Clark and husband Kris of Joshua, Texas; great-grandchildren, Adrianne Perkins and husband Will of Humble, Texas, Allyson (DeMent) Bradford and husband Nate of Dayton, Texas, Tyler Marlow of Huffman, Texas, Troy Simmons of Huffman, Texas, Hayley Simmons of Huffman, Texas, Jason DeBiase of Aurora, Katherine DeBiase of Aurora, Noah Colebar of Kirkwood, Mo., Will Colebar of Kirkwood, Mo., Karlee Clark of Joshua, Texas and Turner Clark of Joshua, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bill DeMent; a grandson, Mike DeMent; a brother, Gale DeMent; four sisters, Gertrude Green, Beulah Daivs, Dana Jones and Gladys Eckstein; and an infant granddaughter, Shannon Marlow.

Mr. DeMent served in the United States Army during World War II with the 89th Infantry Division. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal. He was assigned to Patton's 3rd Army, a lifetime member of the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club and was instrumental with their annual pancake dinner for over 40 years, was a longtime member of Logan Street Baptist Church, a member of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141, and was Senior Saint in 2006. Donald was the proprieter of several area gas stations, restaurants, the Mug Drive In and Don's Cafe.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Rev. Merle Fullerton officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors at the cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a Kiwanis walk through at 7:30 p.m.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club activity fund and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
