Charles R. Deets Jr., 83, died at 8:50 PM Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 19, 1916, at Lafayette, he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1934, and attended Purdue University. On Oct. 23, 1936, he married Mildred I. Roland in Lafayette, and she died May 11, 1985.
Mr. Deets was president of Deets Liquor Stores, retiring in1994. In 1961, he was elected president of the National Liquor Store Association, and was a 25-year member and former president of the Indiana Liquor Store Association. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a life member of B.P.O.E. No. 143, John Purdue Club, Knights of Columbus, and Lafayette Country Club. He was made a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Otis Bowen in 1978, and a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Bert Combs in 1973. He was very active in WPA projects in Tippecanoe County.
He is survived by a son, Charles R. Deets III of Lafayette; a sister, Mary Higgs of Indianapolis; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
