Muriel Bassham passed away Monday, June 27, 2016 in San Luis Obispo at the age of 89 years. She was born September 13, 1926 to Grat and Lula HARDING Decker in Moko, Arkansas. In 1936 the family moved to California seeking employment. They settled in the Stratford area.

Muriel attended Stratford Grammar School and Lemoore High School. In 1945 she met Loal Bassham, a young veteran home from WWII. His family was from Moko, Arkansas and had also moved to the area for employment. They married on April 6, 1946 and settled in Stratford and raised their three children there.

During the young lives of her children, Muriel was a “stay at home mom”. Every year she worked as a Room Mother in her children’s classrooms. She volunteered for any and everything the school needed. Whether it was a cake for a bake sale, a driver for school activities, a chaperone, a seamstress for costumes for plays or dances, or holding offices in the PTA, Muriel was tireless if it could help her children or the school.

Muriel was an excellent seamstress, making most of the families clothing including shirts and formals. She was also, a quilter, in the days when quilts were made on a quilting frame hung from the ceiling. Another specialty was cooking, especially her cakes, pies, and potato salad.

Besides her children’s school, her other passion was her church. The family always attended every Sunday and she made certain her children were involved in every church activity they could attend. She joined the Stratford Presbyterian Church in 1951 and attended there until it closed in 1967. After that time she drove to Lemoore to attend the Presbyterian church. She attended that church until 2010 when she moved to an assisted living facility.

After her children were grown and her husband had passed away, Muriel worked for 20 years in the Commissary at the Naval Air Station, Lemoore.

She is survived by her children, Barbara (John) Pescio of Lake Almanor and Chico, CA, David (Dee) Bassham of Guion, AK and Deborah (Scott) Duden of Pismo Beach, CA, nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Private graveside services were held at the Lemoore Cemetery on July 7, 2016. Arrangements were by Phipps-Dale Funeral Chapel.
