In 1864 at the age of 20, John enlisted for service in the War of the Rebellion. He served two years in Co M 2nd Nebraska Cavalry and for part of that time soldiered under the Union command in the Dakotas fighting Indians. He was with General Hooker when he defeated General Price near Maryville. John was an active member of the G.A.R.
After his discharge, he returned to Westboro where he married Mary Ellis. Mary and John had two sons: Bentley Dean who died in 1918, and William Dean. Mary died a year after the birth of William, who was born in 1867.
John died at his home in Hamburg after an illness of several weeks. He died at the age of 88 years 9 months 26 days.
