Anna Jane Johnston, daughter of John and Mary Johnston was born November 15, 1856 in Decatur county, Indiana. She departed this life September 30, 1935, at the home of her son, John Devore, in Victoria township, Cass county. She came with her parents to Adams county in September 1866. She was one of a family of thirteen children. All are deceased except one brother, James Johnston of Creston, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Jacob DeVore on May 30, 1881 in Corning, Iowa. To this union four children were born. One daughter, Mrs. Della Moore preceded her in death in July 1938; Enos of Galesburg, Illinois; John of Massena, Iowa, and Jake of Corning, Iowa; one niece, Mrs. Ida Symonds, at the age of six came and made her home with her aunt. She was one of the early pioneers of Victoria township. The first part of her married life was spent on a farm near Massena, then later they purchased the old home where her girlhood was spent in Victoria township and lived there until her husband's death in April 1910. Since then, she has made her home with her son, John, and in her home at Corning.

She was a member of the Methodist church. Services were held in the school house, then later 1896 the Victoria M. E. Church was built across from her home. She always took an interest in the church.

She was a lover of her home and ever loyal to her children. She was firm in her belief of right living. She has been in failing health since last spring and was patient through her suffering to the end. She leaves to mourn her departure besides her children, seven grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Victoria M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon at 3:30, with Rev. Ellis of Massena in charge. Interment was made in the Victoria Cemetery.
