Obituary, published in the Fort Payne Journal, Wed. April 23, 1930

Mrs. J.G. DeShields

When Mrs. J. G. DeShields passed away at her home near Chavies on the morning of April 14, one of our finest citizens, and a typical exemplar of all that is fine and noble in our pioneer Christian motherhood was lost to DeKalb County. She was 83 years of age and died suddenly with an attack of heart trouble.

She had been a member of the Methodist Church since girlhood.

The funeral was held at Trinity Church on Tuesday, Rev. G. W. Miller, a former pastor officiating. She left three sons and five daughters, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral. The husband died quite recently.

The survivors are W.L. DeShields, Buffalo, SC; H.M. and J.L. DeShields, Chavies; Mrs. W.M. Stone, Chattanooga; Mrs. P.B. Haralson, Gadsden; Mrs. Levy Stone, Mrs. Walter Harris, and Mrs. T.M. Tolbert, of Chavies.
