Marjorie Jean Blanton passed away peacefully Friday morning, September 14, 2007, at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo. Her only son, Jim and daughter-in-law, Pat, were at her side.
Jean, as she was known to all, was born in Chanute, Kansas, in May of 1921 to Charles C. and Roberta J. DeBolt. Jean's love of books and reading was apparent early on, leading her to pursue great things in her adult life. Following graduation from Chanute High School in 1939, she attended Chanute Junior College and finished her studies at Emporia (Kan.) State Teachers College where she majored in Library Science. After earning her B.S. degree, she worked as a librarian in Emporia, Wichita, Chanute, Coffeyville, Parsons (all in KS) and at Drury University Library of Springfield, MO. Jean was instrumental in the successful conversion of the Drury Library holdings from the Dewey Decimal to the Library of Congress System, a project which gave her great professional pride. Jean was an accomplished musician during her high school years, winning awards at the national music festival in Colorado Springs, CO
Although time robbed her of her ability to play her favorite instrument, the piano, she never lost her love for music. Beginning early in her marriage to Bill, Jean and her family enjoyed traveling around the country together, forming the basis for beloved family memories. In recent years, Jean was a resident of the Montclair Apartments in Springfield and enjoyed many wonderful relationships with friends old and new during her time there.
Among her many interests were contract bridge, needlework, reading, SMMA Art Group, Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority (Emporia, Kansas). She served many years as an appointed member of the Springfield-Greene County Library Board. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bill, whom she had known from an early age in Chanute.
Surviving Jean are son, James R. Blanton and his wife, Patricia, of Seattle, WA.; brother, John C. DeBolt of Lamar, MO.; and nieces and nephews, Linda (Karl) Ubrig of Dassel, Germany, Cynthia (Bennie) Shelton of Forsyth, MO., Jeffrey DeBolt of Southaven, MS., and Kris (Vicki) DeBolt of North Richland, TX, and their families.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, September 22, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. Please remember her with a donation to the Springfield-Greene County Library Foundation or the non-profit organization of your choice.
