INTERVIEW WITH SAMMIE PHILLIPS:
I was born June 12,
1848. My name would have been Sam Houston.
had I been a boy. As it was I was formally named
Flora Josephine, but nicknamed "Sammie" almost
from the hour of my birth. In a way, Sam
Houston had his namesake, regardless of Fate. The
first school I attended was at the red brick cottage
on Perry Street near the Court House, the old Gooch
home. A Mrs. Washington taught it. The next
was the Female Academy on the site of the present
. Junior High School.

Masons met at our house.
On the meeting days my mother left home. Our
home was later burned. A. brick replaced it. I was'
the first child baptized in the Presbyterian Church in
Palestine. The first person buried in the Palestine
cemetery was a condemned criminal. He died of
pneumonia in the jail, and Palestine had to start a
grave yard.
"My husband. James B. Phiilips, was a Missourian
who came to Texas when the Civil War
broke out to fight. He was a widower with four
children. He got his sister to take care of his children.
There were fifteen yoling girls here at that
time. We were ardent Confederates.. Mrs. Bettie
Oder and I are all that are left of the crowd. Mr.
Phillips and I were married April 27, 1869, here
in Palestine."
