María was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Matilda Leal De Herrera, Rita Padilla who she loved as a mother, her infant son, Alvin Martínez, her daughter Sandra Córdova, and her infant grandson, Adam Freddie Joe Lucero. María leaves behind her husband, Bernardo Martínez of 58 years of Romeroville, NM, three daughters, Josephine Roberts and her husband, Joe of Del Valle, TX, Rose Cisneros and her husband, Florention of Colorado Springs, CO and Denise Gonzáles and her husband, Albert Louis of Canada Bonita, NM, her two sons, Edward Martínez of Santa Fé, NM and Bernardo Martínez and his wife, Joan of Princeton, TX, a son-in-law, Philip Córdova of Golondrinas, NM, grandchildren, Alvin Lucero, Matthew and Misty Roberts, Eddie Martínez Jr., Freddy Joe, Xavier Ray, Fabian, Sara and Valentino Martínez, Carla Dean, Alicia McFate, Anthony Nuggett Martínez, Dominique Gonzáles, Albert Gonzáles Jr., Angelica, Bernadine, and Cassandra Córdova and Phillip and Sandy Córdova, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, a dear friend who she loved as a sister, Mary Lou Elicio of Las Vegas, NM, a special cousin, Minnie Vigil of Las Vegas, her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws and numerous nephews and nieces.
María grew up in Montezuma and Las Vegas, NM and was untied in marriage to Bernardo Martínez on September 15, 1952 in Holman, New Mexico. Together they made their home in Colorado Springs, CO and returned back to Las Vegas, NM and made their home in Romeroville, NM.
María and her husband were the first of five generations. María was known for her unconditional love. María took pride in her home and family. María enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, and cooking. María loved to pray and sing.
María taught her family to have faith to be strong, honest and to work hard. María was a devoted Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.
A visitation will held today from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in St. Francis Chapel at Gonzáles Funerals & Cremations. Services will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church with a Rosary this evening at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. Father C. John Brasher will celebrate the Mass. The interment will follow in the Santa Theresita/San Isidro Cemetery in Gonzáles Ranch, NM with her grandchildren serving as casket bearers. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Heating and Air Conditioning Fund at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 403 Valencia Avenue, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
