Samuel R. Davis
BETHALTO — Samuel Richard Davis, 68, retired miner and former officer in miner's locals at Troy and Carlinville, died Thursday at 6 p. m. in St. Mary's Hospital, East St. Louis, where he had been a patient for one day. He had been ill for two weeks before entering the hospital.
A native of England, Davis was born Sept. 9, 1883. He came to the United States in his youth and settled at Troy. While there he was married May 30, 1905 to Miss Fannie W. Morris.
He served for three terms as village alderman at Troy and was a charter member and secretary and treasurer of the United Mine Worker's local there. While at Carlinville he also had served as an officer of the miner's local.
Davis moved 20 years ago to Bethalto and was a member of the Bethalto Fire department and of First Methodist Church. A son, Rodville Davis, is a member of the present Bethalto Village Board of Trustees.
Surviving are his widow; three sons, Carl and Rodville, Bethalto, and Robert of Alton; two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Jones and Mrs. Hazel Marie Koehne of Granite City; four sisters, Mrs. Ollie Paul, Mrs. Charlotte Taylor, Mrs. Mary Gabauer, and Mrs. Alice Hanks, and two half-brothers, William and Fred Droy, all of Troy. He also leaves five grandchildren. The body is at Smith funeral home where friends may call after 7:30 p. m. Saturday. Funeral rites will he Monday at 2 p. m. at the funeral home.

funeral services for Samuel R. Davis, 68, retired coal miner, were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday by the Rev. Kuhlman of Collinsville.
Burial was in Sunset Hill cemetery in Edwardsville. Miss Doris Neunaber served as accompanist for Mrs. Ralph Schuette who sang two hymns.
Pallbearers were Victor Erzen, Edward Brinman, Lloyd Lemon, Francis Prehn, Erwin Dawson and Jesse Sparks.
