*A biographical sketch of Aquila Davis taken from info in Hazzard's History, Henry Co., IN.
Aquila Davis was born December 6, 1813, in Jonesville, Monroe Co., OH, a son of Aquila, a native of Virginia, and Lucretia (Hatfield) Davis, a native of Pennsylvania. His parents came to Henry Co., IN, in 1826, and settled in what was called Rich Woods, Fall Creek Twp., where his father died in 1850.
Aquila was one of nine children born to his parents. He was reared on the home farm, but with the family being as large as it was, when he was quite young, went to work for Samuel Howard, and remained with him for six years. Then, he went to New Castle, Henry Co., IN, remained for two years, and while there, married Linne Harvey on August 1, 1833. Soon, after their marriage, they moved into the woods and cleared a farm three miles north of New Castle. The first 80 acres he bought was paid for with money he had saved from two years' wages at $150 a year. He sold the land, in a short time, for $450, and bought 180 acres on which they lived and raised their family. Aquila moved to New Castle, in the fall of 1879, where he retired from active business and rented his farm out.
Linne, Aquila's wife, died in August 1879, leaving six children: Arminta (wife of Matthew R. Millikan), Harvey, Reason, Viretta (wife of Henry B. Hernley), Sylvester, and Mark. Aquila remarried, in 1881, to Minerva, the widow of William Abbott, and she died on December 25, 1883.
Aquila was a strong Union man and Republican. He was strictly temperate never having used liquor or tobacco.
