Maria Newham Gorham Davis

Maria Newham was the daughter of Daniel Newham of Maryland and Annie (Smith) Newham of South Carolina.

She married Thornton F. Gorham, who was born in 1795 in Kentucky, on April 16, 1840 in Hendricks County, Indiana. In 1850, she and Thornton were living in Brown Township, Hendricks County. Four sons were recorded in the census: John, age 9; Daniel S, 7; Thomas, 4; and William, 2.

By 1860, she was widowed. All of her children were still living and were living at home. She had 2 more children since 1850, a girl named Priscilla A, age 9, and a boy, Thornton F. Gorham, Jr, age 6. On August 14, 1860, she married the widow James Davis, who was born in 1803, in Hendricks County.

In 1870, Maria was living in Lincoln Township. James' daughter, Josephine, age 18, was living with them. Three other children, Thornton Jr & Chinthia, age 15, and Gorham and James' grandson, Charles Davis, age 4, were also living with them.

In 1880, Maria was still in the same location. She was again widowed. The only child living with her was Charles, age 14. He was listed as her step-grandson. A servant, Samuel Mark was also living with them.

In 1900, she was living with her widowed son, Thornton Gorham, and his daughter, Blanche, age 15. The 1900 Census indicates Maria had 6 children of whom 4 were living at the time. Her last name was recorded as Gorham, so she may have returned to using Gorham or the census taker may have simply missed entering her last name as Davis. Her death was recorded as Maria Davis.
