Nathaniel was single and living with his parents and siblings in Keene, Mich., when one Elizabeth "Libbie" Flavilla Fassett came home from Albion College with Jennie, Nathaniel's older sister. Libbie met and was attracted to Nathaniel.

But at 19 years old, Nathaniel enlisted as a private in the Michigan Infantry on August 13, 1862. On Jan. 27, 1863, he was hospitalized with pneumonia at 3rd Division Hospital, Alexandria, Va. On April 30, 1863, he died of pneumonia at 3rd Division Hospital.

After Nathaniel died, Libbie turned her attentions to Nathaniel's older brother Wallace, and they were wed on June 2, 1864.

Nathaniel shares his gravestone with his brother, 14-year-old Emory Harrison Davenport, who had predeceased him.
