Ft.Myers News Press, Wed. August 21, 1968 - Mary M. Bylaska, a pioneer resident of Lee County who once marveled when she learned Thomas A. Edison actually had lights on his gateposts that burned without being lit by a match, died Tuesday in a Fort Myers rest home. She was 97 and had lived at 2127 Monroe Street more than 40 years. Born one of seven children of a Civil War veteran, June 5, 1871, Mrs. Bylaska came to Fort Myers in 1878 when there were only two stores and less than two dozen families here. Her father, Jake Daughtrey, shipped cattle from the Arcadia prairies and the Kissimmee country from a schooner landing in the Caloosahatchee River to the U.S. Naval base at Key West and had staked claim on a homestead on the north shore of the river. In 1893 she married Philip Bylaska, son of a pioneer boating family of this area, who was know as one of the foremost yachting captains and big game fishing guides around. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Royal Neighbors and Rebekahs and once belonged to the Women of the World organization. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Maude Woodson of Fort Myers; three sons, Paul S. Bylaska of Bradenton, Ted Bylaska of Boca Grande and Joe Warren Bylaska of Fort Myers; a granddaughter, Mrs. L. W. WIlliamson of Orlando; seven other grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Leo W. Engelhardt Funeral Home.
