Canton, MO Hilda C. Campen, 70, of Canton, Missouri, died January 18, 2007, in Peru, Illinois. The cause of death was coronary thrombosis, which led to a cardiac arrest. Emergency personnel responded immediately and attempted to revive her, but to no avail. She was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m. on January 18th at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital. The doctor, nurses, emergency workers, and police officers were wonderful and did their best to bring her back to us. Hilda would want us to extend a heart-felt thank you for that effort.

Hilda was born December 27, 1936, in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Alex and Anna Tobler Danz. She married Kenneth W. Campen in Peoria on January 28, 1961. Hilda and Ken celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last year. He survives.

Hilda believed in the power of education. She was a graduate of Metamora High School in Metamora, Illinois, in 1954, and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1958. She received her Masters Degree in 1968 from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.

Elementary School in Kiel, Wisconsin. She developed a fantastic reading program based on phonics and poetry, and taught hundreds of children to read using this approach. Her teaching career was tremendously fulfilling for her. She retired from teaching in 1994.

Hilda was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In addition, she was a member of the Wisconsin State Reading Association and the Swiss Benevolent Society. Hilda was also an accomplished musician. She played the piano and cello, and inspired all of us with her love of music. She was a spiritual person and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. She was also attending Immanuel United Methodist Church in

Hilda was a generous giver, and truly loved her children and grandchildren. Traveling to Switzerland and taking Caribbean cruises brought her joy. Hilda's whole life revolved around helping others, and she was the absolute foundation of our family. She was ambitious, energetic, compassionate, and radiated with positive energy. She always taught us to appreciate the good in others. She was our matriarch, and she will be dearly missed. Our love for her knows no boundaries and our memories of her will live on in our hearts forever.
