Widow of Civil War Vet Active At 91
By PAUL I TRIMPEY

Though "taps” has been sounded for the last of Somerset's Civil War veterans is still remaining a widow of one of the "Boys In Blue". Mrs. Barbara E. Dallas, 91, 780 North Center avenue, was formerly married to Jacob Showman, who served two enlistmentsin the Civil war. After his death in 1905, she married George Dallas.

Mrs. Dallas does much of her own housework and is able to sew without glasses. Yesterday she chatted cheerfully with a visitor, talking about old times.

She was born near Edie, daughter of Samuel and Catherine Faith. Her father was also a Civil War veteran, and her great grandfather, Abraham Faith, was a Revolutionary War soldier for whom the Daughters of the American Revolution have erected a monument in Union cemetery, according to Charles F. Cook.

She married Jacob Showman about 15 years after the Civil War, when he was a widower with nine children. They went to housekeeping in a log house near the former Kantner woolen mill south of Edgewood grove.

WORKED HARD
I've done my share of hard work,"she declared, telling how she cared for horses and cows, and then helped the men make sawlogs in the woods—in addition to caring for her large family.

Her husband was a private in Company E, 171st Pennsylvania militia, enlisting first time in 1862. He reenlisted in Company I, 52nd Pennsylvania volunteer infantry. He is buried in St. John’s cemetery, Somerset township.

Mrs. Dallas lives with her son, Elmer Shaulis, and great grandson and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Colly.

She will not participate in the Memorial Day exercises because she seldom leaves her home. Several months ago when attempting to go out on the street, she suffered a fall, but was not seriously injured.
