Married 1) Rev. Orlando Newell Benton. Together they were the parents of Ella E. Benton, Minnie Benton, William Werner Benton, and Orlando Newell Benton Jr.; the last child being the only one to survive to adulthood.
In October 1873, Lydia traveled to Tokyo, Japan and there taught at the Ballagh Academy for four years before marrying 2) director John Craig Ballagh.
She died on a returning trip to the United States, and was buried in Monument Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Jan. 16, 1884. On Mar. 2nd of the same year, she was disinterred and taken by wagon to Owego, New York, where she was laid to rest with her first husband and infant children.
