COMPRESS WORKER KILLED UNDER GIANT MACHINERY

Alexander Cuaron of Dona Ana, about 51, was killed instantly at 12:55 today when he was caught beneath a cotton press at the Farmers Compress.

Complete details of the accident were not known early this afternoon. However, sheriff deputies who investigated says it appears to be a mixup in the signals resulted in the man being beneath the press when it was placed in operation. The huge press standing 30 feet high is used to press cotton into bales.

Cuaron was in a pit beneath the warehouse floor where the press is located. He had been sent there to remove hooks from the cotton sacks prepared to go into the press. Before Cuaron could reach for safety the press was set in motion.

Observers said signals for operation of the press were given by slamming the door. The operator of the huge machine mistook another noise for another signal early reports indicated and started machinery crushed Cuaron.

Wife and child survive.
