Sarah Detwiler Baker

Mrs. Sarah Detwiler Baker, 88, of Fulton, died Wednesday, July 20, 1994, at her home. She was born April 22, 1906, in Williamsburg, a daughter of the late Edgar Martin and Sally Gregory Crump. She married Otto Lee Detwiler of Fulton on Aug. 15, 1928, and he preceded her in death in August 1970. She then married Frank M. Baker on April 12, 1977, and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1991.
Survivors include four children, Donald Detwiler of Fulton, Thomas Detwiler of Minneapolis, Richard Detwiler of Webster, N. Y., and Dorothy Detwiler Hutchins of Stone Mountain, Ga.; two step-children, John Baker of the state of Arizona and Barbara B. Hull of the state of California; 14 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Mrs. Baker graduated from William Woods College in 1926. As a member of the Fulton community, she remained active in William Woods affairs throughout her life.
Mrs. Baker's attendance at William Woods was a family affair - four of her sisters also attended the university. The five Crump sisters attended William Woods between 1914 and 1926: Bessie (1915), Minnie (1914), Polly (1922), Susan (1923) and Sarah (1926).
In 1992, Baker endowed the Bessie Crump McClellan, Minnie Clyde Crump Davidson, Polly Crump, Susan Crump Hagenmaster and Sarah Crump Baker scholarship in honor of all the sisters. It is awarded annually to assist a Callaway County student with demonstrable financial needs.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah Crump Baker's family," William Woods University President Jahnae H. Barnett said. "The University has lost a good friend. Sarah Crump Baker has left a legacy of service and devotion to William Woods that will be missed."
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Court Street United Methodsit Church in Fulton, was active in William Woods College Alums, served Meals on Wheels, and was a former resident of Waukegan, Ill., where Otto Detwiler served as school principal.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 23, at Debo Funeral Home in Fulton, with the Rev. Jim Robinson officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Serve Meals on Wheels Program.
