Violet Cross Bettis, 94, of Waco, passed away Feb. 19, 2006, at St. Catherine's Center in Waco, Texas. Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 in Greenleaf Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Stockstill officiating. Burial will be at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, Texas.

Mrs. Bettis was born Oct. 12, 1911, in Elkins Community, Brown County, Texas. Her parents, James Riley Cross and Ada Flanagan Cross were early settlers in Texas in the mid 19th century. Vi was a graduate of Brownwood High School and graduated from Howard Payne College in 1930. She attended graduate school at the University of Colorado. Following her graduation, she taught public school in Blanket, Texas. She was a talented painter and pianist. She married Robert Allen Bettis, an HPC classmate, in Silver Springs, Md., on July 22, 1934, while they were working in Washington, D.C. Upon their return to Texas in 1936, they owned cattle ranches in Brown County until 1954 when they moved to Waco. Vi and Bob were the proprietors of Bettis Art Center in Waco from 1954 until her reitrement in 1984. She was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Waco. Following her retirement from Bettis Art Center, she spent over 6500 hours as a volunteer at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. "Bob" Bettis in 1974.
