John William was the son of John Wesley and Mary Alice Cross. There were eight children in the Cross family; Gillie Ezra, John William, Mary Elizabeth, Pearl, Cora, Walter S, Wesley McClinton, and Jasper Lock Cross. Shortly after the death of John William, the Cross family left Tennessee and moved to Delta County, Texas. John's parents were farmers of mainly cotton.
All of the remaining Cross children married and remained in Texas, except for Cora, who married John Wilson and moved to Arkansas.
