Mr. Andrew Cross died in this city yesterday morning from heart failure. Mr. Cross was a man well known to many in the community. He was born in Scotland, according to his own account, about fifty-six years ago. He was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and, it is said had been a professor or tutor, there. He was a fine Greek and Latin scholar, and a fluent speaker. He was a man of marked attainments. A number of years ago he came to Portland where he has since resided. Like all Scotchmen he was a great admirer of the poet, Burns, and he had that bard's poems by heart. When called upon he was never at a loss for ideas or appropriate language in which to clothe them. For many years while in this city he worked as clerk for Andrew G. Arey, the restaurant keeper, but lately conducted one of his own at No. 27 Free street. He was married and leaves a widow, son and daughter. The son is in Scotland and the widow and daughter left for that country lately.
