Mustered-in for service, in the Spanish-American War, May 20, 1898, with Troop C, NY Volunteer Cavalry, at Camp Black, Long Island, New York. Troop C, NY Volunteer Cavalry deployed to Puerto Rico aboard the Massachusetts, July 27, 1898, from Newport News, VA, docking at Ponce, PR. He saw combat at Coamo & Asomanto during the campaign. Returned from Ponce, PR, aboard the Mississippi, September 3, 1898, and docking at Jersey City, NJ, September 10, 1898, Troop C was given a Welcome Home Parade on October 1, 1898 and mustered-out of federal service, November 25, 1898, Brooklyn, NY.

He served with his brother James G Cronkite in Troop C, NY Volunteer Cavalry
