Amelia Kennard Wright Croft died October 19, 2016.
Mrs. Croft was a long time resident of Greenville, South Carolina moving there in 1947 and later moving to Birmingham, Alabama to live with her son in 2006 where she died.
Internment will be at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken, South Carolina where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband, Randell DeBohun Croft, Jr. There will be a memorial in Greenville, South Carolina at Christ Church Episcopal at a later date.
Mrs. Croft was born July 28, 1916 in Easton, Maryland, the daughter of Philemon Kennard Wright and Mary Lockwood Hardcastle, and attended the public schools there and went on to preparatory school in Baltimore. Upon graduation she attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania graduating in 1937 with a degree in psychology and a developing interest in the new profession of social work. She then enrolled in the Graduate School for Social Work at Smith College where she finished in 1939 with her MSW and immediately started in the social work profession in Providence, Rhode Island. Three years later she met Randell in Providence and they married in April 1942, and began a family in 1943. Shortly thereafter, Randell joined the Navy and left for the Pacific and she returned to Easton for the duration of the War. She and Randell moved South after the War with a brief stay in Charlotte before settling in Greenville in 1948. By the early 50's and after her fourth child, Mrs. Croft returned to full time in social work with stints with the State Welfare Dept. , the Mental Health Clinic and eventually joining The Family and Children Services where she became Executive Director and worked some 26+ years, retiring in 1986. During that period, in addition to handling her duties at Family Service, she also worked to nurture the profession, working with Florida State University in their Graduate School of Social Work and employing a number of their graduate interns. Her love was working with families who were adopting children, but her proudest professional achievement was helping to establish the Battered Women's Shelter in Greenville County. With a career spanning 48 years, she was justifiably proud of her professional accomplishments. A lifelong Episcopalian, Mrs. Croft was a member of St. James, Greenville for 55 years where she was a strong supporter of the of the parish and served as its first female Vestry member. She also was involved in the ECW her entire adult life and held statewide office in South Carolina. Upon moving to Birmingham she joined All Saints' Episcopal Church with her son and his family and participated regularly until her health failed; she was treasurer of the parish ECW at age 91. She was also a long term member and supporter of the Daughters Of The King. Her profession, and church were very important, but her family was the paramount interest in her life. The immediate family was the main focus, but she kept track of generations of her and her husband's family and stayed in touch with dozens and dozens of them. She was a "People Person" in all aspects of her life.
Mrs. Croft is predeceased by her husband Randell, son Randell DeBohun Croft, III, and is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ann Daniel Croft of Raleigh, NC, daughter, Mary Croft Alley of Charlotte, NC, and sons Thomas D. Croft, Sr. of Greenville, SC, and Philemon K. Croft, Sr. of Birmingham, Alabama, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
