Maria Crew was born in 1828 in Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, East London to William Henry and Susan (nee Sheppard) Crew.
Maria worked as a Seamstress before she married John Edward Bradfield in 1846 at St Dunstan's Church, Stepney.
John Edward was born in 1823 at Derry Hill, Chippenham in Wiltshire, the eldest son of Richard John and Ann (nee Bailey) Bradfield.
John worked as a Brickmaker before becoming a professional soldier to serve with the Royal Engineers in the Crimea Campaign, he apparently witnessed from a distance 'The Charge of the Light Brigade" at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854.
Maria & John together with their three children, Richard John Edward, James Austin Bailey & William Henry Crew emigrated to Australia in 1856 sailing on the s.s. New Great Britain arriving in Moreton Bay in January 1857. A daughter Ann Susan had died in infancy in England.
Maria & John had a further six children, Mary Maria, Susan Ann, George Matthew Crew, Georgina Caroline, Jack & Clara Jane. Their ninth child Jack attended Sydney University and, became Dr. John Job Crew Bradfield, C.M.C., M.E., B.Sc.Eng., the designer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Story Bridge in Brisbane amongst his achievements.
Maria (Ria) was my maternal Great Grandmother Ann Charlotte's older sister.
