SHAPLEIGH – Leon Emery Crediford, 88, of Shapleigh Corner, a former teacher, dairy farmer and insurance agent, died Saturday, August 13 at a Sanford hospital.

He was born in Shapleigh, a son of George T. and Mary (Emery) Crediford, and attended Shapleigh schools. He graduated from the former Lindsey High School, Shapleigh, the former Kent Preparatory School, Fort Kent, and the University of Maine at Orono. As a student at UMO, he participated in several forestry testing programs.

He was a lifelong resident of Shapleigh and taught at the Ross Corner Elementary School. He then worked as a research technician for the former American Agricultural Chemical Company for a few years.

Mr. Crediford had owned and operated a dairy farm in Shapleigh and delivered dairy and farm products door to door in the Sanford-Springvale area. He also drove a school bus for the Shapleigh School Department. After retiring from the dairy farm, he owned and operated the Leon E. Crediford Insurance Agency, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh, where he had been a deacon, treasurer, trustee, janitor, Sunday school teacher and editor of the church newsletter. He helped organize the construction of the church's annex, now known as the Crediford Room.

Mr. Crediford was a 50-year member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge. He was a 75-year member and past master of the Mousam Lake Grange, and was a member and past master of the Pomona Grange. He was a member of the 4-H Club, then known as the Farmers' Club.

He was a former member of the Board of Selectmen and the school board in Shapleigh. He was an honorary member of the Shapleigh Fire Department and plowed snow for the town for many years.

He was active in the Acton Fair for 81 years and had been fair secretary, treasurer and former superintendent of stables. He had most recently been director of the fair. His biography appeared in the 1976 publication of Maine's Most Prominent People.

His first wife, Marion Winslow Crediford, died in 1931. His second wife, Amy Pillsbury Crediford, died in 1983.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Harry (Lista) Staples of Shapleigh, and Mrs. Donald (Laeta) Smith of Norcross, GA; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A funeral was held Monday, August 15 at the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh. The Revs. Walter Wakeman, Harrison Nye and Linwood Potter officiated. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery.
