Born July 30, 1929 in Charleston, he was a son of Walter T. Craven and Annie Catherine O'Quinn Craven. After high school, Mr. Craven joined the US Air Force. Throughout his life he played and coached baseball and football, including coaching the "B" football team at R.B. Stall High School. He was an outdoorsman who shared his passion for hunting and fishing with all of his children. He participated on the Air Force Shooting team, and was an avid golfer. Mr. Craven retired as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service including three years in Europe and he served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He earned an associate's degree in computer science and was a system analyst at The Citadel for 20 years.
