Chad Aaron "Ernie" Cozad , 38, of Monticello, Iowa, died Monday morning, February 16, 2009, at Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein following an extended illness. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 23, 1970, the son of William and Suzanne (Smock) Cozad. He was raised and educated in the Colesburg and Monticello area, and received his G.E.D. at Kirkwood Community College.
Chad was united in marriage to Kristine Martensen on February 11, 1989, in Anamosa, Iowa. They later were divorced. Chad lived most of his life in Monticello where he worked for Quality Builders, in construction, and as a factory worker. After his accident, he lived in On with Life in Ankeny, the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, and the last couple of weeks at the Grandview Health Care Center.
Chad's hobbies were riding motorcycle, fishing, camping, watching NASCAR and canoeing. His favorites include NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Harley Davidson Motorcycles, Pittsburgh Steeler Football, Iowa Hawkeye sports and the puppet Ernie. He collected shot glasses, NASCAR, and Harley Davidson memorabilia.
Survivors include his four children, Aaron Martensen, Hayley Cozad, Nathan Cozad, and Heather Cozad all of Monticello; his mother, Suzanne (Richard) Langel of Manchester; his father, Bill (Judy) Cozad of Greeley; his maternal grandmother, Donna Smock of Strawberry Point; one stepsister, Shelley (Scott) Bessey of Parksley, Virginia; two stepbrothers, Christopher (Jerri Jo) Langel of Bettendorf; and Joshua Langel of Allen, Texas; and his stepnieces and stepnephews.
Chad was preceded in death by his brother, Rodney Cozad; maternal grandfather, Donald Smock; and paternal grandparents, Erma Evers and Walter Evers.
