U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Lebanon Law School in 1858, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law at Linden, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in command of the 10th Tennessee Cavalry of the Confederate Army. After the war he engaged in agricultural pursuits and was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving (1891-1903). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in banking until his death at age 75. He died at age 75 and his home in Brentwood, near Nashville, was added to the U.S. Register of Historical places in 1988.
