Mrs. Ashmore taught school for 30 years, with 22 of these years taught with the Greenville County School District. She was educated in the schools of Asheville, N.C., and received her BA from Furman University and Masters degree from Clemson University plus 30 hours above the degree.
Mrs. Ashmore was chairman for the Parenting Program, part of the School Challenge Program for grades one through grades three. She was involved with a pilot program with the State Department of Education in Children's Literature and believed a successful education program for young children during their formative years would develop each child to his fullest potential for all future learning. Mrs. Ashmore was Teacher of the Year for 1982, representing Mauldin Elementary School.
She was a member of Edwards Road Baptist Church, where she worked with many activities of the church, including directing the Children's Choir, teaching Sunday School and working with the G.A.s. She sang and was a soloist with the Adult Choir and Senior Choir.
Mrs. Ashmore was in much demand as a guest soloist in several area churches. While at Furman University, she was a member and soloist with the Furman Singers. She was a member of The Greenville Chorale, was former President of The Music Club of Greenville, and conducted private piano lessons in her home. She served on the Greenville Symphony Board and the South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs. She was a member of the Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an Honorary Sorority of Women Educators, and was a member of the Greenville Woman's Club. She served as a Docent at Furman University for "Cherrydale House".
Surviving in addition to her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Cox of Simpsonville, are her husband, G. Maurice (Reese) Ashmore; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Ann Ashmore Jenkinson and Mr. Jack Edwin Jenkinson Jr. of Greenville, and Mrs. Dru Ashmore Nelson and Mr. Charles Jerry Nelson Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters, Mrs. Virginia Cox Owens and brother-in-law, Mr. Hubert Owens of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Jean Cox Rhoden of Simpsonville; and grandchildren, Cara Elizabeth Jenkinson of Greenville, Lindsey Pearce Nelson, Carter Andrew Nelson and Blair Elizabeth Nelson of Atlanta, Ga.
