Charles Allen Cox, 83, Wabash, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007, at 10:20 a.m. at Miller's Merry Manor West. He was born April 9, 1924, in Westfield, Ill., to Leon and Mary (Schuff) Cox. He married Bernice "Beanie" Knotts at the Treaty Christian Church on March 4, 1945; and she survives.
Charles was a 1943 graduate of Linlawn High School, and was a meat merchandiser for Clark's Finer Foods in Wabash 30 years, retiring in 1988. Charles was a member of the Bachelor Creek Church of Christ and the American Legion Post 15, both of Wabash. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and the Cubs, win or lose. Charles was a World War II Navy veteran, who was lost at sea several days, when his ship the USS Ommaney Bay was sunk by a Japanese kamikaze plane.
He is also survived by a daughter, Cathy (Tom) Hamilton, Jupiter, Fla.; two grandchildren, Tony Hamilton, Dallas, and Nate (Liz) Hamilton, Newburg; and five great-grandchildren, Derek Hamilton, Indianapolis, Sarah Hamilton, Frisco, Texas, Grant Hamilton, Emma Hamilton and Eva Hamilton, all of Newburg. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Wabash Chapel, 1241 Manchester Ave., with John Leinbaugh officiating. #Burial will be at Falls Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the funeral home. Preferred memorial is the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
