Longtime Manistique, Michigan resident, William E. Cowman, 92, passed away on June 5, 2010 at The Woodlands Assisted Living in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where he has resided for the past six years.

He was born June 20, 1917 in Escanaba, Michigan the son of Charles and Lillian (Duquette) Cowman and was a graduate of Manistique High School with the Class of 1935. He then served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. at Camp Cooks. During World War II, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre earning five battle stars. He later served in the Michigan National Guard as the Administrator and Warrant officer for the Co. D, 107th Engineer Battalion for 8 years.

In March of 1948, he married the former Elsie M. Boyce in Escanaba, Michigan. They made their home and raised their son, Bob, in Manistique. Elsie preceded him in death on December 18, 2003.

In his earlier years, Bill was employed as a bookkeeper and clerk with different businesses and agencies in the Manistique area. In 1959 he was elected to the position of Schoolcraft County Treasurer and held that position until his retirement in 1984.

Bill was a member, past deacon and active committee member of the First Baptist Church in Manistique. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #83 of Manistique, the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post #4420 of Manistique, the Michigan and Schoolcraft County Democratic Parties and the Indian Lake Golf and Country Club. He also was a member and former officer of the Lakeside Lodge #371 F. & A. M. of Manistique and the Ida Chapter #54 O.E.S. of Manistique.

Bill served as the President of the Michigan County Treasurer's Association in 1972-1973.

He loved to golf, enjoyed traveling and was a very kind and giving man. Bill was very patriotic and was always active in community veteran activities throughout his life.

Bill is survived by his son, Robert (Judy) Cowman of Plymouth, WI; a granddaughter, Kelly; and a great granddaughter, Ella.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Fairview Cemetery in Manistique with Reverend David Hueter and members of the Schoolcraft County Veterans officiating.

Memorial donations may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Manistique.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Woodlands Assisted Living for their care, concern and love to Bill over the past few years, and also thank the Agnesian Hospice Hope Program for their care in comforting Bill in his final days.
