Uriah Lee "Lee" Coulter was the youngest of four sons of Samuel Coulter & Maria Bash. He married on June 1, 1900, to Clara Luella Pipher (1868-1946), daughter of George W. Pipher & Catherine Stover. Lee & Ella had two children, a son and a daughter; both died in infancy and are buried near their parents, who lie next to Lee's parents. The son was born May 8, 1905, and died two days later, May 10, 1905.
On March 29, 1941, the day of his tragic death at age 72 on Conrad's main intersection, Lee Coulter walked uptown to buy a loaf of bread. Starting home---a distance of just a few blocks---he hailed a gasoline truck at Conrad's only stop sign, and chatted with the driver, Jim Gould, for a few minutes. After the truck started away, Lee remembered the sack of bread he had set on the running board. He hurried after the slowly-moving vehicle, grabbed the door handle with one hand and tried to step onto the running board. His foot slipped and he fell in front of the rear wheel. A skull fracture caused instantaneous death.
His nephew Fred Coulter Sr. happened to be in town; and to him fell the sad task of carrying the unhappy tidings to Lee's unsuspecting widow. Ella refused to believe him at first. How could her husband of 40 years be dead? She had just sent him uptown a short while ago to buy a loaf of bread? She scolded Fred for making a bad joke. When he finally convinced her that he wasn't joking, that Lee was indeed dead, Ella became hysterical.
