Search party finds plane victims dead
LANDER, Wyo.-A search party this week reached the wreckage of a single-engine airplane missing since early May and reported all four persons aboard were dead, the Fremont County Sheriff's Department said.
Sheriff C.A. McDougall said the search party reached the wreckage of the Beechcraft 35 at about 11:03 a.m. after a four hour trek on horseback through rugged mountain country, about 20 miles southwest of Lander.
McDoougall said he was in radio contact with the search party, which left a base camp at dawn for the 12-mile climb to the site of the wrckage, located in the heart of the 13,000 foot Wind River Mountains.
Four persons were aboard the airplane when it disappeared May 4 on flight from Rapid City, S.D. to Soda Springs, Idaho. On board in addition to the pilot, Paul Corn, 38, Sepulveda, Calif, were Corn's wife, Betty, and Mr and Mrs J. Hale, Soda Springs.
McDougall said the search party remained at the scene of the wreckage for several hours before returning to Lander.
The searchers approached the wreckage on horseback Monday and established a base camp as dusk fell. The party included sheriff's deputies and inspectors from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
The plane was last heard from when Corn radioed for weather information from the Lander Airport. Searchers from Wyoming, Idaho and Colorado logged more than 200 hours looking for the aircraft before the search was suspended May 15..
