State Police said Miss Cooper was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and was transferred to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, where she was pronounced dead by Dr. E.W. Ditto, Jr., county medical examiner. Death was attributed to a fractured jaw and skull, and lacerations of the head.
Listed in "fair" condition in the Frederick hospital are other passengers in the car: Paul Kline III, 17, and Stephen C. Leatherman, 17, both of RFD 1, Smithsburg; and Bonnie E. Schaeffer, 18, and Barbara A. Schaeffer, 15, both of Brunswick.
