Brunswick Girl Fatal Victim in Auto Crash – a 16 year-old Brunswick girl was killed and four other teenagers were injured in a one-car accident Saturday evening at Brunswick. Frances Reba Jane Cooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley S. Cooper and a 10th grade student at Brunswick High School, died of injuries about four hours after the car in which she was riding went out of control on Souder Road, near Second Street, and crashed head-on into a telephone pole.
State Police said Miss Cooper was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital and was transferred to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, where she was pronounced dead by Dr. E.W. Ditto, Jr., county medical examiner. Death was attributed to a fractured jaw and skull, and lacerations of the head.
Listed in "fair" condition in the Frederick hospital are other passengers in the car: Paul Kline III, 17, and Stephen C. Leatherman, 17, both of RFD 1, Smithsburg; and Bonnie E. Schaeffer, 18, and Barbara A. Schaeffer, 15, both of Brunswick.
Police said the car, a 1964 sports coupe driven by Kline, traveling west on Souder Road at an apparent high rate of speed, was demolished when it ran off the left side of the road and collided with a telephone pole. Trooper Gordon H. Smith investigated for State Police, and there have ben no charges.
Mrs. Cooper is survived by her parents, Stanley Sylvester and Ruth May Albert Cooper; the material grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Jane Brown of Lovettsville, Va.; and four brothers: Stanley Lee, James William, Roy Wendell and Larry Milford Cooper, all at home.
Funeral services were held at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Brunswick; burial was in Park Heights Cemetery, Brunswick; arrangements by the Feete Funeral Home, Brunswick.
