Mildred Arline Richards Cook, 97, died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at her residence in Independence, Ore.
She was born in Rochester, Ind., to Oron Elvert Richards and Hazel Gertrude Doering Richards. She spent her younger years in Indiana. She moved to New Mexico for one year, and then to San Diego, Calif., where she graduated from San Diego High School in 1931.
In the fall of 1931, Mildred moved to Corvallis and entered Oregon Agricultural College. She was invited to join the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She truly enjoyed her college years. Arline met Owen Cook at a freshman dance.
She graduated in 1935, and was wed to Owen in the Alpha Gamma Delta house in 1936. They settled on a farm and raised five children.
Survivors include her half-sister, Lauralee J. Souza, her children, Thomas O. Cook of Poseyville, Ind., Beverly Looney and Byron Cook of Albany, OR.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Owen Martin Cook; sons Clive Michael Cook and Robert Lynton Cook. Half-brother, John Richards, half-sisters, Sophia Margaret Ruynon, Kathryn Lucille Meade, and Helen Marie Sewall.
Arline and Owen were blessed with 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all of her family.
A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Masonic Cemetery in Albany, Ore., and 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Ind.
