Daughter to Mae S and Walter A CookSarah Ruth Carpenter, a resident of Oxnard, died of natural causes at Finest Living Guest Home III on November 30, 2011. She had lived in Ventura County since 1958.

Sarah Ruth was born on May 1, 1915, in Osage City, Kansas, to Walter A. and Mae Stafford Cook. She was educated in the public schools of Saline Kansas; at Kansas Wesleyan University and at the University of Kansas, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education and a BA in English.

Her first love was music, which she taught for six years in Kansas high schools, along with English and Latin. In 1943, Sarah Ruth joined the American Red Cross to serve as a service club director during and immediately following WWII in England and Germany. She returned to the U.S. in 1946, and continued her vocal studies with private instructors in Wichita, Kansas; Los Angeles and Chicago. She sang as a soloist with large choirs at churches in all three cities until voice-over use ended her music career.

During the next 10 years, she earned an MA degree in Psychology at the University of Minnesota, worked in student activities at the University of Chicago, and served as Dean of Women at New Mexico State University at Las Cruces. She served four and a half years in Japan in adult education with the U. S. Army, and in personnel at the headquarters of the American Red Cross in Tokyo. She also worked for the Red Cross as a social worker at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Colorado and as a Field Representative in northeastern Iowa.

In 1957, Sarah Ruth married Joseph Theodore "Ted" Carpenter. They moved to California, and, for the following three years, Sarah Ruth worked for the American Red Cross on the three military bases in and around Oxnard. Later, she accepted a position as Institutional Parole Agent at the California Youth Authority's Ventura School, which later moved to a new facility near Camarillo.

Her second love was travel. She and husband Ted took every opportunity to travel during their working years, and in retirement. Not only did they visit most of the United States, but they traveled to Europe many times, to Australia and New Zealand, to Central America, and to Japan and the Pacific Islands.

Sarah Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years and is survived by two nephews John L. Cook of Cambria, California; and Raymond L. Schreck of Chico, California. In addition, she has cousins in Kansas and Iowa, and great-nieces and nephews in California.

Sarah Ruth was a lifelong member of The United Methodist Church, and was active in St. Paul's UMC of Oxnard. She was a charter member of the Oxnard/Port Hueneme Branch of the American Association of University Women, and held membership in several other professional organizations.

A celebration of Sarah Ruth's life will take place at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, on Sunday, January 29, at 11:30 a.m., following worship. A reception luncheon will follow the celebration, in the fellowship hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1800 S. C Street, Oxnard, CA 93033.
