Carl was actually the son of James and Anna Barger, who both died from the Spanish flu when carl was a baby. He was soon adopted by Harry and Minnie Constant.

Carl Constant, 74, of Springfield, formerly of Mechanicsburg and Illiopolis, died at 10:04 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Hospital. He was born Sept. 28, 1918, in Macon County the son of Harry and Minnie Hurt Constant. He first married Erma June Crain in 1940 in New London, Mo. She died in 1972. He then married Mary Ducey in 1973 in Galveston, Texas, and she also preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Emma Slighton and Marie Chambom. Mr. Constant was former owner/operator of Constant Excavating. He was a retired member of Local 965 Operating Engineers and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are two sons, Carl L. of Springfield and Darrell Sr. of Mechanicsburg; three daughters, Nancy Mechtoldt of Houston, Texas, Linda Roach and Sandy Constant, both of Springfield; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Louise) Wise of Macon, Betty Spires of Galesburg, Lucille Cross of Monticello, and Margaret Lane of Harristown; several nieces and nephews. Remains will be cremated. Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Vancil Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Harvey B. Wright officiating. Interment will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
