Hospitalized with Continuous Fever 8/4/1863 in C.S.A. Hospital at Gordonsville, VA; transferred on 8/6/1863 to C.S.A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, VA , where diagnosed with acute dysentery; returned to duty 9/3/1863.
Resigned on 11/17/1863 because of personal misunderstanding with Col Funsten; remained in same unit as Personal Courier of General Rosser.
On 4/29/1864 assigned to Field & Staff of General Rosser's Cavalry Division.
Promoted 10/15/1864 to Captain, Inspector General of Rosser's Brigade.
Paroled 4/27/1865 in Winchester, VA.
Postwar he was Lawyer at Winchester, VA, beginning in1866; Member VA Legislature, 1881-82; Solicitor General of U.S. in 1894.
