Hezekiah lived in Halifax County as a youth and married his first wife there. He served as Private in the Civil War in 2 separate units. He served with Company B, 60th Virginia Infantry and was stationed in South Carolina and then Virginia. He was wounded at Beaver Dam Creek, near Mechanicsville, and was home for a year. He enlisted again with Halifax Artillery. He fought during the Battle of the Crater and probably until the surrender at Appamattox. After the war, he went home to find that he had been reported killed and his wife was either married or involved with someone else. He left the Halifax area and worked as a Bible salesman . He married Ida Crump in Conway, NC. and then bought a farm in Greensville County a short distance from St. Andrews Church. His mother was Martha (Patsy) M. Conner.
