The Passing of a Grand Old Lady

--------------------
Martha Conner, wife of Mashech Downing, was born in Preston County, West Virginia, January 13, 1840, and died at her home in Troy, Iowa Nov. 9,1925, at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 9 days. In early life she moved with her parents to Indiana and then to Iowa in the early 50's, making her home in and around Troy until her death.
She was married to Mashech Downing March 11, 1858. To this union were born seven children, five daughters and two sons, the eldest daughter dying in infancy; Sarah May died Oct. 5, 1863; Amos U. died April 16, 1895; Anna (should be Ammie), wife of Henry Cramer of Custer, Montana; Della Downing of Drakesville; Homer of Pulaski; Laura E. Darnell, whom she made her home with for the past few years. She leaves fourteen living grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She united with the M.E. Church in early life and always lived a faithful Christian. Mother Downing was one of those grand and noble Christian charachters whose life was always filled with the fragrance and sunshine of good cheer and hope, and was always to speak and refer to the pioneer days and the hardships and privations which it was necessary to endure when they first came to Iowa. Those coming in contact with Mother Downing were always enriched and blessed by her sunny and happy disposition. She would often refer to the early ddays of Methodism and the log church house at Troy where the good old Methodists of her childhood days worshipped God in the spirit of old Methodism and where her soul was blessed on many an occasion.
In her death Davis County and the community of Troy, has lost another grand and noble charachter whose life enriched the country and the kindom of God upon eaarth. Mother Downing was present at the dedication of the old Methodist church at Troy over 75 years ago, and often referred to the nightly revival meetings which followed the dedication, and she rejoiced at being present at the new church that was built in 1923.
The funeral services were conducted on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 11, at the Troy M.E. church by Rev. S.P. Trostle, the former pastor whose life was made richer by his visits to the home of Mother Downing. Rev. Moore, of Troy, assisted in the services.

Weep not that her toils are over.
Weep not that her race is run
God grant we may rest as calmly
When our work, like hers, is done
Until then we yield with gladness
Our mother to Him to keep and
Rejoice in the sweet assurance
"He giveth His loved ones sleep".
