MUNCIE--Well known retired Muncie Police Officer, John David Conn, 80, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Muncie on November 24, 1931, the son of Orie and Lola Conn and graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1950. John served his country in The United States Navy during the Korean War, serving aboard the USS Dortch DD 670.
He joined the Muncie Police Department in 1956 and 9j 1958 became the first President of the Indiana Juvenile Officers Association. In 1959 John was promoted to Captain and in 1964 was in charge of Prairie Creek Reservoir security. In 1965 he was promoted to detective and later to Director of the Police Athletic League (P.A.L. Club). He became the coach of the Golden Gloves, training amateur and professional boxers. In 1973 as the U.S. Boxing coach, John hosted the Polish National Team in Muncie traveling to Venezuela the same year. He trained such fighters as Gary Guiden and Julius Anderson. Through amateur and professional rank, Gary Guiden reached the height of his career for the middle weight championship of the world. John retired from the Police Department in 1977 and later served as the Delaware County Zoning Officer.
Mr. Conn was a member of the Harvard Association in Police Science, a 50-year member of Local 661 Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union, the Delaware County Athletic Hall of Fame as a Boxing coach, United States Boxing Coaches Association, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #87, a 30-year member of the American Legion, Muncie Moose Lodge, Delaware County Masonic Lodge #46, Indianapolis Shrine Club, and an Honorary Member of the Mohave Valley Masonic Lodge #68 of Bullhead City, AZ.
John has received commendations from former Muncie Mayor Paul J. Cooley and was awarded the Saginaw of the Wabash by Senator Birch Bayh. In 1972 former Indianapolis Mayor Richard G. Lugar declared March 27, 1972 "John Conn Day". Other commendations have been received by General Electric Cablevision Corporation in Anderson, the Indiana Association Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, and by John C. Stoltzfus, Editorial Promotion Manager with The New York Times.
Survivors include his wife whom he married in 1983, Nancy Kay Conn; his children, Sue Moore (husband-Ron), John D. Conn II, Carla Crull (husband-Mike), and Mike Conn (wife-Andrea); his step-children, Mark Mitzelfelt (wife-Robin), and David Mitzelfelt; his grandchildren, Missy Harrold (husband-Scott), Amy Criswell, Adam Moore (wife-Tracy), David Conn, Steven Crull, Gideon Crull, Joshua Conn (wife-Stephanie), Emilee Conn, and Gabe Conn; step-grandchildren, Joseph A. and Chase A. Mitzelfelt; his great-grandchildren, Tyler and Lauren Criswell, Olivia Harrold, and Taylor and Addison Conn; his special niece and nephew, Megan and Brock Taylor; also surviving are his sister, Ada Barrett and his godson, John Franklin Magrou.
John was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Vera Cox, Thelma Enterkin, and Dorothy Clark.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Northside Church of God in Muncie, with Pastor Jeff Veatch officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery with military rites by The United States Navy and Veterans of Delaware County. Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, February 6, 2012 at Northside Church of God and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
