Admitted to the Virginia Millitary Institute on July 4th 1857. Commissioned an officer in Company E, Virginia 1st Infantry Battalion on 01 May 1861. Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 11 Oct 1862.Commissioned an officer in Company C, Virginia 24th Infantry Regiment on 16 Dec 1864. Promoted to Full Captain on 11 Mar 1865.
