Wife of Alfred Holt Colquitt, Governor of Georgia

Sarah Colquitt was a daughter of Henry and Nancy (Thorpe) Bunn, and her siblings were Marcus Henry, Hugh Lawson, William, Thaddeus, Henry, Jr., Judson, Portia, Harriet (married Gen. Henry Tarver), and Martha. Sarah's first husband was Frederick Tarver, who died soon after they were married. With her second husband, Alfred Holt Colquitt, she had two children, Walter T. Colquitt and Elizabeth Hill Colquitt (married Major William Louis Marshall).

From the Atlanta Constitution, 4 May 1898, p. 9:


Attended by a Large Party of Mourning Friends from All Parts of State.

Macon, Ga. May 3 (special) - The remains of Mrs. Sarah Bunn Colquitt, widow of the late Senator Alfred H. Colquitt, arrived this morning about 11 o'clock from Atlanta, accompanied by the following persons from Atlanta:

Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Crew, Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Hill, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. W. Palmer, Rev. Walker Lewis, T. A. Hammond, Jr., W. Colquitt Carter, Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Arkwright, Mr. and Mrs. George P. Howard, Miss Hattie Colquitt, Mrs. W. L. Marshall, Miss Jennie Hammord, Miss Laura Hammord, Fred Newell, Hugh Colquitt, Joseph Thompson, J. F. Barclay, J. W. Warren and others.

There was a large party of relatives and friends to meet the body on arrival at Macon. Among them were Colonel T. F. Newell and T. F. Newell, Jr., of Milledgeville.

Undertaker Wood took charge of the body at Macon, and it was carried direct to Rose Hill cemetery, followed by a long procession of mourners. The remains were laid by the side of her husband, the late Senator Colquitt. The funeral services were impressively conducted by Revs. W. W. Landrum and Walker Lews, of Atlanta. The pallbearers were: Messrs. T. D. Tinsley, A. L. Miller, J. W. Cabaniss, B. C. Smith, of Macon; B. B. Crew and T. A. Hammond, Jr."
