Coleman was born in Franklin County on April 6, 1919, to Thomas Samuel Young and Winnie Lovell Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Ryland Coleman; five sisters, Lottie Gibbs, Anne Turner, Audrey Stultz, Ruby Stultz and Opal Young; and four brothers, Leslie Young, Lauren Young, Lowell Young and Wendell Young.
She graduated from Bassett High School in 1937 and was a charter member of Oak Level Baptist Church for 70 years. At the church, she had served as president of the Woman's Missionary Union, director of Vacation Bible School, taught Sunday school for more than 50 years, and was a choir member for many years.
Surviving are four daughters, Becky Wagoner and Margie Frith, both of Collinsville, Phyllis Greenway of Wake Forest, N.C., and Annette Mullins of Henry; a son, Carlos W. Coleman of Oak Level; a brother, Glen P. Young of Collinsville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
