Graveside services for Oleta Cole, 84, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at San Gorgonio Memorial Park in Banning. She died Sunday at her Banning home. The cause of death has not been determined.
Born in Texas in 1911, Mrs. Cole came from a family of nine children. She taught expression and theater arts in New Mexico and had her own program reading poetry on Radio Station KICA there during the Depression. She married James H. Cole in 1934 and moved to Long Beach in 1939. The couple moved their family to Banning in 1952.
They owned the Unocal and Texaco service stations in Banning from 1953 until Mr. Cole's death in 1977, their son, Chuck Cole said. Mrs. Cole was active in several charitable organizations, the Baptist church, scouting groups and the Pass Players theater group. She was a librarian at Banning Public Library from 1961 until she retired as head librarian in 1979, Chuck Cole said.
About 15 years ago, he said, Mrs. Cole proudly received the Banning Mexican-American Community group's Outstanding Citizen Award for her efforts to help the community.
Mrs. Cole is survived by her aunt, Willie Belle Baldwin of Long Beach; her sister, Betty Turner of Long Beach; a brother, Billy Mounts of Pismo Beach; her son, Chuck of Banning; and, three grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Banning library at 21 W. Nicolet St., Banning, CA 92220.
