The funeral services of the late Elizabeth A. VanVleet, who died at her residence in Portland, April 12, 1905, were held yesterday, April 14, 1905, from her home in LaCamas. The remains were brought to LaCamas, accompanied by the sorrowing husband and two daughters, and taken to the old homestead, where simple but touching remarks were made by Ref. T. H. Roach, of LaCamas. At the conclusion of the services, the body of this noble woman was laid to rest close by the farm, where the shifting shadows of both farm house and trees will face across her grave. The pall bearers were: Henry Christ, D. H. Gary, H. Sodawaser, Peter Berggren, H.H. Carpenter and LeRoy Morgan.
Elizabeth Angeline VanVleet ws born in Missouri, May 8, 1836, and came to Oregon in 1852. She married in 1856 in Oregon City to Louis VanVleet, and went as a bride to the old homestead at Fern Prairie, first occupying a log house in the orchard. Since 1862, Mr. and Mrs. VanVleet lived in the house, which still stands, until going to their residence in Portland.
Mrs. VanVleet has proven herself worthy as a pioneer, devoted in her home, faithful in her service to her children while also revealing in her nature a large interest for others.
She leaves her husband and five children to survive her. The long married life of Mr. and Mrs. VanVleet bespeaks much for their success and devotion in home and public life. The children are Mrs. Dr. Louise Wright, of LaCamas, Miss Edith and Miss Stella VanVleet of Portland, Mr. Felix and Louis Jr., of Fern Prairie. She also leaves two brothers, Mach and T. M. Coffey, and an older sister, Mrs. Abbott.
