Son of Michael Cody and Catherine "Kitty" Murphy of The Rower, Kilkenny, Ireland, where he was born. Edward immigrated to the US with his brother James on the SS Erin in 1880. Edward tended bar in Worcester, Mass., where he married his first wife, Bridget Lawler who died in childbirth in 1886 along with their child. Edward then moved out west, met Elizabeth Kennedy in San Francisco. He followed her to Portland, OR, where they married in 1889. He worked at various foundries and had nine children.
